Burgundy Rubber Plant Guide

FICUS ELASTICA AKA BURGUNDY RUBBER PLANT

Ficus elastica is probably the most rugged of the Ficus family.

Native to Southeast Asia - it’s beautiful dark glossy leaves make a sleek and soft addition to any bright room in your indoor space.

While it’s not as picky as lyratas or benjaminas, it will definitely benefit from biweekly followups.

GENERAL CARE

Bright light preferred! Appreciates occasional misting. Make sure to clean the leaves to keep up their sleek appearance. Occasionally remove dead foliage. 60-85 degrees is ideal, don’t expose it to temps below 50!

LIGHT

Tons of access to bright indirect light will help this ficus keep its glossy burgundy appearances up. The brighter the light, the darker and richer the foliage will get. A room with plenty of windows is ideal. Ficus Burgundy can adapt to low light, but will likely trade its dark maroon color for a greener complexion. Direct sun? No thanks! Might cause leaf burn.

WATER

Ideal time to water is when the top layer of the soil looks like it’s drying out.

Water thoroughly, and make sure to remove the excess water from the saucer.

Keep it within the 3-5 range on the moisture meter.

WHEN DOES IT EAT?

Plant food once a month during the spring and summer months is ideal.

Plant growth slows down naturally during the winter, so hold off on feeding until spring and summer roll around again.

TOXICITY

Ficus are toxic to pets and people. Ingestion can cause mouth and stomach irritiation, with possible vomiting.

DO
Mist and clean foliage occasionally.

Let the top layer of soil dry out before watering.

DON’T
Put a ficus next to central heat or a radiator, the heat can damage the leaves and stress the plant out.

Worry too much if a ficus drops foliage, its natural!
